A question I myself once asked early on in my development career.  The answer sent me spiraling into a new world of web development in which non-technical users can realistically maintain their websites easily.

You may be asking what does "maintain" the site mean.  With a content management system (CMS) not only can you add text and graphics you can also accomplish things like order entry, lookup customers information, get sales reports or other website traffic reports.

Most of the sites that we develop have some sort of a niche that they do well.  We wrap the CMS around that and allow the user to create content that is tailored to there needs.  Hotel listings, photo gallery, portfolio items, blog entrys, houses for sale/rent, testimonials, videos, downloads and so much more.

So in summary to answer the question what is a content mangement system?  It is a tool that allows non-technical users to run their business or organization online.  So much more than a text editor.
